Borrowed chords — adding color
Concept
A borrowed chord is a chord 'borrowed' from a parallel key (same root, different mode). In C major you can borrow from C minor: bIII (Eb), bVI (Ab), bVII (Bb), iv (Fm). These chords aren't 'in the key' but they sound right because the ear hears their connection to C.
