Stack 7ths on every note of the major scale and you get a 7-chord family with predictable qualities: Imaj7 - ii7 - iii7 - IVmaj7 - V7 - vi7 - vii(m7b5). In C: Cmaj7 - Dm7 - Em7 - Fmaj7 - G7 - Am7 - Bm7b5. This is the jazz musician's home base.
